PRESS RELEASE: Coca-Cola Names Six Environmental Champions as Torchbearers in Jakarta
Jakarta, 18 March 2008 – Six individuals, highly committed to environmental conservation and from different professional backgrounds, have been named by Coca-Cola Indonesia as torchbearers in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch Relay in Jakarta on 22 April 2008.
The six individuals include a veteran environmental activist, leaders of non-profit organizations, celebrities, as well as inspiring figures and key contributors in the preservation of nature. The selection criteria were based on the environmentally friendly theme of the Beijing 2008 Green Olympics.
The torchbearers were directly nominated by Coca-Cola Indonesia, with input from World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in Indonesia.
“Coca-Cola is the longest-serving Olympic partner and one of the presenting sponsors of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch Relay. We are excited to be part of an international event such as the Olympic Torch Relay, especially as this is the first time that the Olympic Flame is passing through Jakarta,” said PT Coca-Cola Indonesia Corporate Affairs Director Titie Sadarini.
The individuals named by Coca-Cola Indonesia as Torchbearers for the 2008 Olympic Torch Relay in Jakarta are: Emil Salim, a well-known figure in nature conservation in Indonesia; Tri Mumpuni W. Iskandar, Director of the Institute of Community-Based Business and Economics (IBEKA), who actively pursued the development of micro hydro-power plants; Azhar Idris, an Aceh resident who initiated the replanting of mangrove trees in coastal regions devastated by tsunami; Valerina Daniel, the Goodwill Ambassador of the Ministry of Environment who is also a former model and TV presenter; as well as musician Agustinus Gusti ‘Nugie’ Nugroho and actress Nirina Zubir, who are both Honorary Supporters of WWF-Indonesia and are active participants in environmental preservation campaigns with WWF-Indonesia.

“Their nomination in the Olympic Torch Relay represents Coca-Cola’s appreciation towards efforts in environmental conservation. We hope their commitment to the environment will be emulated by the Indonesian public and the rest of the world, reflecting the spirit of Green Olympics,” added Titie Sadarini.
The worldwide Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch Relay will be the longest in the history of the Olympic Games, traversing 21 countries, with more than 22,000 torchbearers covering approximately 137,000 kilometers (85,128 miles) in a span of 130 days. The flame will travel through all five continents represented by the Olympic Rings.
After its world-wide journey, the Olympic Flame will make its final round on mainland China from early May to early August. The Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch Relay concludes August 8, during the Opening Ceremony of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
Coca-Cola is a Global Partner of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch Relay, a Worldwide Partner of the International Olympic Committee and a sponsor of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Coca-Cola was also title presenter for the landmark Athens 2004 Olympic Torch Relay – the first Relay to circle the earth.
As the presenting partner of the Olympic Torch Relay, Coca-Cola would like to encourage the public to undertake positive actions that will bring about improvements in nature conservation. Showing commitment to water conservation, recycling, energy and climate protection as well as rewarding those dedicated to making positive changes in the environment, will increase local participation in environmental preservation activities.
To welcome and celebrate the Olympic Flame in Indonesia and to increase awareness about nature conservation, Coca-Cola Indonesia will launch a series of environment-related programs from 19 March to 22 April 2008, with special focus on fun and exciting events for teenagers.
“In Jakarta, a specially designed bus (Eco Bus), powered by environmentally friendly bio-diesel, will be on a mission to improve environmental awareness. The bus will visit 20 high schools and universities in Jakarta and bring along numerous interactive activities. A number of schools will also be introduced to bio-pore technology, a technique to absorb water to prevent floods and conserve water,” said Coca-Cola Indonesia Marketing Director David Tjokro.

Coca-Cola Indonesia and WWF Indonesia will also be collaborating in the ‘Green Screen’ program at Coca-Cola bottling plants in five cities. Under the program, students will be invited to the companies’ auditoriums for the screening of environment-related films, which will be followed by interactive discussions. Coca-Cola hopes the discussions will encourage students to actively take part in the protection and preservation of nature.
Apart from these programs, Coca-Cola Indonesia bottling plants in Lampung and Central Java will also be working closely with local non-profit organizations, media institutions, and regional governments to plant trees and donate seedlings to schools. In Surabaya, Coca-Cola will organize river rehabilitation activities with organizations committed towards environmental preservation.
In today’s press conference, Coca-Cola will also present bio-pore drills to representatives of three schools in Bekasi. The drills will be presented by Coca-Cola Indonesia Corporate Affairs Director Titie Sadarini, Coca-Cola Indonesia Marketing Director David Tjokro and WWF-Indonesia CEO Mubariq Ahmad.
